Artist’s Statement

A great thinker once said that a good artist’s statement says more than her art ever does.

    Materials

Aside from paint and glue, I strive to use as little new material in my pieces as possible. My art supplies come from antique stores, thrift shops, and the plants and ground outside. You may think of my pieces as recycled or upcycled. Or you may think of them as a bunch of garbage I glued together, if you so choose.

Most of the bones I use come from eBay. I rely on the sellers of these materials to attest to their origins, e.g. roadkill, found pieces, and castoffs from the food and clothing industry. Occasionally I skeletonize a found animal myself; the javelina skulls were all found in the desert around Tucson, and I cleaned them through the slow process of ambient temperature maceration, which avoids damaging the bone structure.
